What
is Exposure Therapy?
If
you have a problem dealing with phobia, then you’re probably
looking for a way to deal with it. If that sounds like you, then
you’re in luck, because this article is going to talk about a
way for you to deal with it in a way that is effective and efficient.
I’m going to talk about exposure therapy. We can use this
method of exposure therapy as a way to combat our phobias and fear. By
doing this, it makes it easier for one to rise up and face their fears,
and in doing so; the fear that is plaguing them is typically no longer
there. See, you have to understand that the only TRUE way to get over a
phobia is by actually doing it.
That’s what exposure therapy is. It is the act of safely
facing up to your fears. It involves small, gradual encounters with
your fear, as a way to sort of “test the waters.”
This is one of the best ways (In fact, I would say it IS the best way)
to combat phobia, because it does it in a way that you learn something,
you learn how to get over your fear, and you develop an understanding
of what causes these fears. It’s important to know this
information, because when you do, it is easier to get over your fears
when you start having them again.
This is why it is important to use exposure therapy as a way to combat
your fears. If someone has a fear of driving (Due to whatever reason),
then the only practical way to get back into the car is to just do it
right? Well, by using a method of exposure therapy, you can have a
friend take you on a drive, which will force you to be in the car, and
just take baby steps to getting back behind the wheel yourself.
Exposure therapy is a really useful way to overcome any assortment of
phobias, whether it is driving fears, fears of certain activities, or
whatever. You are going to need to get over those fears eventually
(especially if it is something as everyday as driving), and this is one
of the only real practical ways to do it. You could go out and talk to
a doctor about it, but then your going to be put on medication that
will result in all kinds of weird side effects that will probably do
you worse off anyway. At least by facing the fear yourself, you are
actually facing up to it, getting over it, and learning what caused the
fear to begin with.
