Are Anxiety or Panic Attacks Caused By Genetics?

One of the looming questions in anyone’s mind who has ever dealt with a phobia or panic attacks before is whether or not panic attacks are caused by genetics; and this is a good question but one we're not entirely sure the answer to!. Are you having panic attacks because it runs in the family the way that high blood pressure does, or are you just unlucky and it is causing you to freak out about everything?

The truth is that panic attacks and phobias probably can be a result of genetics. If you have had a lot of panic attacks lately, then you need to identify whether or not your family has a history of phobias. If you find out that this is case, then the truth is that your anxiety is probably from genetics, but that doesn't mean that you are doomed to a life of suffering.  With a treatment program such as The Panic Puzzle, you can still overcome your panic attacks, regardless of thier cause.

Now the question becomes a question of how to you get rid of these fears? Do you go out to the doctor’s office and pile up on meds, or do you go the long way around and try to overcome them yourself. My advice is to go the long way around, and I’ll tell you why; if you go out and get a bunch of pills that help to deal with anxiety, then yes you will no longer have to worry about that, but what about all of the side effects that come with the medication? Generally, they are FAR worse than the anxiety was to begin with.

Go the long way around and try to overcome your fears on your own, and you can do this by using a method called exposure therapy, which is when you gradually confront the fear in a way which demands that you face up to it. If you have a fear of driving, then have your friend drive you to where you need to go; this way, you aren’t behind the wheel, but you are in the car, and you are dealing with a fear that is holding you back from driving. Once you see that not every drive results in an accident, it will be easier to get over the fear, and get back to driving yourself to the grocery store.

So as you can see, your phobia may be due to genetics, but there are certainly ways to overcoming them, and by using exposure therapy as a method of overcoming them yourself, then there is really no fear that you cannot overcome.
